Why homeowners choose Webster's Quality Painting

A sheetrock skim coat is the difference between a wall that holds paint and a wall that shows every flaw the moment light hits it. Most drywall repairs fail not because the patch was wrong, but because the finishing was rushed. At Webster's Quality Painting, we tape, mud, and sand every surface to a true paint-ready finish before a brush ever touches the wall. Mike Webster has been doing this work for 26 years, we're fully insured, and we back exterior work with a 2 to 3 year warranty. If your walls aren't ready, your paint job won't be either. Call us at (612)-987-1566 and we'll take a look.

Drywall work ranges from patching a single nail hole to hanging and finishing an entire room from bare framing. What drives cost isn't the footage alone. It's the number of coats needed to level the surface, whether the existing substrate has water damage or old texture that needs to be feathered out, ceiling height and access, and how tight the finish tolerance is before interior painting begins. A basic patch repair might run a few hundred dollars; a full room installation with multiple skim coat passes can run well into the thousands. The range is wide on purpose. Every job is different. Contact Webster's Quality Painting for an accurate estimate.

Our Drywall Process: Taping, Mudding, Sanding, and Skim Coating

We don't skip steps. After hanging or patching, we apply joint compound in coats, letting each layer cure before the next. Paper tape goes down first on seams, embedded fully in the mud so it won't bubble or crack later. We feather each coat wider than the last to blend the repair into the surrounding surface. The final skim coat is a thin, full-surface pass that fills micro-pores and levels any remaining texture variation. After that, we sand smooth. You won't see the seam. You won't see the patch. That's the standard we hold every job to, whether it's one wall or ten. Painters who skip the skim coat are hoping you won't notice. You will, the first time light comes through a window at an angle.

New Drywall Installation: What to Expect from Framing to Finish

New construction and room additions require hanging sheetrock to the framing, taping all seams and inside corners, and finishing to a smooth, paintable surface. We work closely with carpentry prep so the framing is true before the first sheet goes up. A proper installation starts with making sure studs are plumb and square. Warped framing telegraphs right through drywall no matter how good the finishing is. After the sheets are hung and screwed, we tape, apply three coats of joint compound with sanding between each, and finish with a full skim coat where needed. The final product should feel solid when you knock on it and look flat under a raking light. If it doesn't, we haven't finished yet.

Drywall Repair: Cracks, Holes, and Water Damage Done Right

Small holes from doorknobs, larger damage from plumbing access, settlement cracks running along seams, or soft spots from a slow leak. We've repaired all of it. Water damage is the one we take most seriously. If the source isn't fixed first, no repair holds. We'll tell you that honestly upfront, even if it means the job doesn't start the same day. Once the substrate is dry and stable, we cut out the damaged section, back it properly, tape and mud in stages, and skim the repair to match the surrounding surface. Then we prime it before any interior color work begins, because bare compound soaks paint unevenly and the repair will show. That's a step a lot of contractors skip. We don't.

When to Call a Professional Instead of Patching It Yourself

Small nail holes, you can handle those. A crack that's come back twice after you patched it, a soft spot on the ceiling, damage larger than about six inches across, or anything that shows signs of moisture. Call us. DIY patches done without proper backing, taping, and finishing almost always show after painting. The repair telegraphs through the paint, especially on ceilings under interior lighting or on walls where light rakes across the surface. We serve the Twin Cities metro including Burnsville, Woodbury, Richfield, and surrounding communities. If you're not sure whether a repair needs a pro, call (612)-987-1566. We'll give you a straight answer.
